1949 GRADUATING CLASS OF PMSS<\/h2>\n

The School closed the Boarding School in 1949 and the institution sought a new direction.<\/p>\n

The 1949 Pine Mountain “Notes<\/a>”\u00a0<\/strong>describes the closing of the high school:<\/p>\n

For the first time since its founding thirty-six years ago, Pine Mountain Settlement School is operating without boarding students. They are\u00a0missed in many ways; the quiet of the\u00a0campus after the last school bus leaves;\u00a0absence of student chapel services on\u00a0Sunday; the passing of a student labor\u00a0program which did so much to make\u00a0<\/em>our community life run smoothly. <\/em><\/p>\n

But\u00a0Pine Mountain has not lost its vitality.\u00a0<\/em>One has only to step into the School House<\/a> on any school day to realize that!<\/em><\/p>\n

The considerations leading to the\u00a0change from a boarding high school to\u00a0<\/em>a consolidated elementary school were\u00a0various. Trustees have been alarmed\u00a0<\/em>at the necessity for using capital funds\u00a0to maintain a boarding school at present-day high costs. They felt too, that\u00a0Pine Mountain had a definite responsibility\u00a0toward the younger children of\u00a0the immediate community. Several\u00a0one-room county schools had three or\u00a0four emergency teachers a year with\u00a0long breaks between. Such teaching\u00a0<\/em>failed to prepare pupils for high school\u00a0at Pine Mountain and few of the children close to us had enough interest in\u00a0more schooling to come.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Board asked three well-qualified men to survey our situation and\u00a0give their recommendations. This\u00a0committee was composed of Dr.\u00a0William Jesse Baird, president of\u00a0Morehead State College; Dr. L. E.\u00a0<\/em>Meece of the Department of Education\u00a0of the University of Kentucky; and Dr.\u00a0Howard Beers of the Department of\u00a0Rural Sociology of the University of\u00a0Kentucky. After studying their report\u00a0the Board took action last April with\u00a0the following results. <\/em><\/p>\n

Berea College was\u00a0<\/em>asked to sponsor our administration,\u00a0leaving Pine Mountain to operate\u00a0under its original articles of incorporation. Pine Mountain\u2019s new Board of\u00a0Trustees is composed of nine members\u00a0of the Berea College Board. Berea\u00a0does not assume any of the financial\u00a0load. The budget must still be raised\u00a0by Pine Mountain School. Five one-room county schools have been consolidated at Pine Mountain. The Harlan County Board of Education pays\u00a0<\/em>the five teachers and the bus drivers\u00a0and furnishes buses to bring in the\u00a0children.<\/em><\/p>\n

President Hutchins<\/a> and\u00a0members of the Berea staff have been\u00a0of the greatest help during these days\u00a0of reorganization, not only with suggestions and advice in their specialized\u00a0fields\u00a0but in the locating of needed\u00a0personnel. This is a year of pioneering\u00a0<\/em>but the zeal of the staff, the enthusiastic help of our Berea colleagues, and\u00a0the heartening cooperation of the\u00a0County school board and our neighbors\u00a0give us great hope for the future of\u00a0our work.
