{"id":10755,"date":"2014-05-04T19:39:43","date_gmt":"2014-05-04T23:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitright.pmss.net\/?page_id=10755"},"modified":"2020-10-17T15:08:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-17T19:08:52","slug":"morris-philosophy-of-secondary-education","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=10755","title":{"rendered":"GLYN MORRIS 1937-38 Writing Philosophy of Secondary Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pine Mountain Settlement School<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Series 04: Directors<br \/>\nSeries 13: Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>GLYN MORRIS\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Philosophy of Secondary Education 1937-38<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TAGS: Glyn Morris; Philosophy of Secondary Education; Secondary education; Pine Mountain Settlemet School; Harlan County, KY; philosophy;<\/p>\n<p>While Glyn Morris was Director, he sought to codify his educational philosophy and objectives for the Pine Mountain program. \u00a0The following position paper\u00a0was provided to the staff workers at Pine Mountain in an effort to bring the full staff on board with the school&#8217;s new educational mission.<\/p>\n<p>It is titled, &#8220;Philosophy of Secondary Education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Philosophy of Secondary Education [1937-38]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The pupil is an individual with needs as determined by ability and background to which the curriculum, as much as possible must constantly be made sensitive. Recognized completion of school comes when the student has used all that can be offered on the basis of his&#8217; needs and abilities, and not in terms of arbitrary units.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The curriculum should be constructed on the basis of local needs and the larger body of common knowledge which man needs in his daily living &#8211; in proportion as seems best, keeping in mind always the welfare of the student and constantly checking the curriculum In every available way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Learning Is best promoted and retained when based upon interest and expressed in activity.\u00a0\u00a0 As much as possible, interest should be used as the teacher&#8217;s most effective tool.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With this in mind, teachers should be constantly alert to local conditions and daily situations which are pregnant with possibilities for stimulating interest, we recognize, however,\u00a0 that lack of tools and materials or the limitation of organization sometimes requires other incentives and methods.\u00a0\u00a0 We also recognize the weal-mess of such and the need to keep constantly in mind the limitations of other, more arbitrary methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This means, then,\u00a0 that the teacher must not only be familiar with her particular field of subject-matter but must be sufficiently familiar with other particular fields of knowledge to be able to draw upon them and to interrelate\u00a0her teaching.
