Angela Melville Album II – Part III. “Helen de Long.”[melv_II_album_218.jpg]

The XII HELEN de LONG PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM was assembled by Helen B. de Long, the younger sister of Ethel de Long, co-founder of the Pine Mountain Settlement School.

Helen was born February 1887 in New Jersey to George and Arabella M. de Long. Her older sister, Ethel, cared for the family when her parents were no longer able to do so, and moved the family, including Helen, with her as she attended Smith College in Northampton, MA, and taught high school English in Easthampton, MA, Springfield, MA, and Indianapolis, IN.

When Ethel finally left for work in Kentucky, first at the WCTU ((Woman’s Christian Temperance Union) Settlement School in Hindman, KY, then co-founding the Pine Mountain Settlement School with Katherine Pettit in 1913, she kept in close contact with her family through her many letters describing her experiences. Those letters are part of the PMSS Collection and their images and transcriptions can be found by following the links in the Guide to the de Long-Zande Papers.

As PMSS developed into a viable institution, Helen visited often throughout the period between 1913 and the 1920s. She photographed the School, community activities, and the environment. The original photographs are currently in the Berea (KY) College Hutchins Library Special Collections and Archives. Images of selected photographs from her album are displayed in the gallery below.
