The original Tool House I stood near the present Tool House II<\/a> — just down the slope of the lawn. The construction was simple. Comprised largely of fieldstone gathered from cleared fields and with a gable roof, the building housed the critical tools used in repair and maintenance on the campus.<\/p>\n

Constructed in 1914-15, the tool house was a critical storage structure and a focal point for all actions associated with the physical maintenance of the institution. Today Tool House II, next to the Office<\/a>, serves much the same function and shares with Draper Building<\/a>\u00a0the role of keeping the physical needs of the School addressed through repair and maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, furniture, and various critical physical needs that have grown with time at\u00a0the one-hundred-year-old institution.<\/p>\n

The building was also a fundamental player in the education of many students who passed through the School and found in their work assignments the threads of a life-long trade. Automotive mechanics, gardening, furniture making, landscaping, etc., required tools. “Tool House” was an apt name, as this was the location for housing the most important tools used in the upkeep and care of the facilities. The tools were kept in order by a visual system that was described in this manner:\u00a0“…each tool had its portrait on the wall behind it.”<\/p>\n

This original structure was torn down in 1951 and a new “Tool House II” was constructed during a summer workshop for young Quaker adults who came to the School to assist in the continuous upkeep required of the School facilities.<\/p>\n
