These things and friends, the high ideals of the school, its beauty of location, its work and dignity for same, are some of the things I am thankful for that I&#8217;m a member of the community there.Thanking you and Mrs. Morris again for letting Sue and me return to live, I am,<br \/>\nRespectfully,<br \/>\nAugust<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>AUGUST ANGEL WAR LETTERS, 1945<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>August left the School in 1942 for other employment.\u00a0In 1944 he\u00a0was called to serve in the United States Army during World War II and its aftermath. He spent the first year of service at various Army camps, where his\u00a0training included\u00a0German military terms, language, lifestyle and recognition of aircraft and army material. August&#8217;s assignment took him to Germany as a Special Agent with the 970 Counter\u00a0Intelligence Corps (CIC) Detachment, Department of the Interior.\u00a0He served until March 1946.<\/p>\n<p>During August&#8217;s time overseas, he corresponded with his wife <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=5528\">Susie Hall Angel<\/a>, relatives, friends, and former co-workers at Pine Mountain Settlement School. He saved 170 of those letters, all in V-Mail format in which each letter was\u00a0censored,\u00a0photographed and reduced in size to\u00a0approximately 5&#8243; x 4&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>Images and transcriptions of three of those letters are recorded below. One is a handwritten letter to August from <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=16210\">Alice Joy Keith<\/a> (Mrs. C.A. Jack), a PMSS science teacher from September 1937 to\u00a0\u00a0June 1945. The other two letters (handwritten and typewritten) were from August to his wife, describing meetings in Europe with <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1015\">Glyn Morris<\/a>, director of the School from\u00a01931\u00a0until\u00a01942. Evelyn is still vivacious and spirited, everyone\u2019s sweetheart.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The hillsides are like rose gardens with the pink blossoms of laurel. Is there spring beauty amid the tragedy there?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I\u2019m going home to harvest a bumper crop of apricots, to get them into the mouths of the children in Europe. He was more\u00a0surprised than I because in a way I expected to run into him,\u00a0since I knew he was in Germany and would no doubt be\u00a0attending this series of concerts. We talked a bit and the few\u00a0minutes we were together he asked many questions \u2013 mostly\u00a0about you and the children. I put him at ease regarding Ann and\u00a0Mike, and told him that we now own almost all of a little village\u00a0and that since leaving Pine Mountain we had managed at least to\u00a0get along.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mr. Morris was very happy to see me and would have talked a lot\u00a0more, but the concert was about to begin \u2013 so I found out he was\u00a0stationed in Salzburg, Austria, which is only an hour\u2019s drive from\u00a0Rosenheim, and told him I\u2019d drop in and we could chat over past<br \/>\ntimes at Pine Mountain. I\u2019ve been thinking about the meeting ever\u00a0since. We last talked to each other over 3 (8?) years ago in the\u00a0office at Pine Mountain, and now halfway around the world in\u00a0Austria \u2013 what a life and a small world!<br \/>\nLove,<br \/>\nAugust<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>21 August 1945, to\u00a0Susie (Hall) Angel from August Angel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To: Mrs. Sue Angel<br \/>\nWheatland, Pennsylvania<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From: Mr. August Angel<br \/>\nCIC Det. 970 Team 28, HQ US FET, APO-655 c\/pm NY, NY<br \/>\nBad Aibling, Germany<br \/>\n21 August 1945<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dear Sue:<br \/>\nLast Monday evening I went to Salzburg, Austria, purposely to\u00a0visit with Capt. Morris and, much to my pleasure, I found him in\u00a0and had a long talk with him about things in general. Everything\u00a0goes nicely with him and, at this time, he is resting fairly\u00a0comfortable as compared to what he has been getting since\u00a0hitting the European continent on D plus 12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I want to bring out the difference between what he is experiencing\u00a0in Germany and what I am doing, and you will see how much\u00a0better off I am in getting the lucky break that I did by getting into\u00a0CIC (Counter Intelligence Corps) work. Morris hit the French\u00a0coast 12 days after the invasion over one year ago, and his outfit\u00a0has been building bridges and repairing roads all across France\u00a0and Germany, always from 5 to 100 miles behind the fighting<br \/>\ninfantry. All Morris and his outfit saw was destruction and territory\u00a0that was evacuated of natives due to the fighting. Most of the time\u00a0he was so far off the main lines of communication that there were\u00a0few or no towns and consequently he had to live in tents and poor\u00a0farm buildings. Since he couldn\u2019t find any people, he learned no\u00a0French and likewise no German. Now he has hit a fairly nice town\u00a0and large enough to offer entertainment, and he and his bunch\u00a0are so thankful that they don\u2019t mind the fact that they still sleep on\u00a0cots and live in a house so bare that the rooms offer no comfort<br \/>\nor luxury except what the men themselves do to make it so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In comparison, I flew over the ocean in a luxury plane and have\u00a0lived in hotels or castles ever since, have servants waiting on me,\u00a0have my own car and under no Army regulations, which gives me\u00a0the freedom to go and do almost anything in Europe. Though Mr.\u00a0Morris and the others I visited with the other night are all officers,\u00a0they really envied the type of work I am in and remarked that they\u00a0sure&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">August 21, 1945<br \/>\nPage 2<br \/>\n&#8230;would like to be in that kind of an outfit. It made me happy and a\u00a0bit lightheaded to think that I was connected with such an\u00a0organization as CIC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mr. Morris will be in Salzburg for a while yet and, despite the fact\u00a0he has already 38 months in and most of them overseas, he\u00a0does not think he will be getting to return to the States for some\u00a0time yet \u2013 and he is also over 38, too bad on the officers.
