The GUIDE TO The Pine Mountain Story 1913-1980,\u00a0<\/em>provides links to chapters the comprehensive history of the settlement school written and illustrated by Mary Rogers<\/a>\u00a0in 1980. The booklet intended to consolidate the information about the School was distributed to visitors, donors, new hires and students. It was also used as a fundraising incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Rogers was arguably the most appropriate person to write such a comprehensive history of the School as the keeper of the record while acting as volunteer librarian and archivist. An employee of the School for over 50 years m she served\u00a0first as housemother from 1942-1945, then in a variety of roles — teacher, artist, naturalist,\u00a0environmental education supervisor, and community outreach worker — and\u00a0volunteer librarian, Mary was dedicated to promoting the history of the institution\u00a0until 1983, when she developed cancer and her work was suspended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Rogers was the wife of Burton Rogers<\/a>, director of the Pine Mountain Settlement School from 1949 to 1983. Much loved and respected as a couple, each left a distinctive and significant imprint on the School. Burton was a prolific records gatherer and stayed in correspondence with hundreds of former staff, students and members of the Board of Trustees. His records and others, such as the early School Secretary and later Board member, Evelyn K. Wells are reflected in Mary’s historical account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a survey of Pine Mountain Settlement School history from the founding of the School until 1980, The Pine Mountain Story 1913-1980<\/em> remains a valuable and basic resource in the Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
