[cold_b_029_mod.jpg]<\/p><\/div>When Glyn Morris<\/a>, Director of Pine Mountain Settlement School, was looking for a dietitian to fill the vacant position at the School, the sister of Edith Cold<\/a> was recommended. Morris began the process of checking her references and looking into her qualifications. It is not surprising that she was selected for the position.<\/p>\n

Her sister Edith Cold was a legend at the School and even more so at the national level for her heroic work during the Armenian uprising and resulting genocide in Turkey at the turn of the century. Bertha, apparently more demure, was also held in high esteem by those who knew her as seen in the many praises she received from her colleagues. One letter describes her:<\/p>\n

I should think MIss Cold would be an excellent person for your school. She is self-reliant, practical and able to value things at their true worth. She puts the best of herself in everything that she does, is unsparing of her time and strength and absolutely unselfish. As a\u00a0dietitian\u00a0she could fill your needs I am sure for she knows dietetics perfectly. I can recommend her ability to give young girls a practical sensible training if they come under her supervision.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bertha Cold, and her sisters Edith and Lucile Cold (Manley) came from a Quaker family. According to the Staff Directory<\/a> of\u00a0Pine Mountain workers, Bertha Cold studied at Pratt University in Brooklyn, New York. Her last known address was Staten Island.<\/p>\n
