Margaret Walker was one of a succession\u00a0of nurses who\u00a0worked in the Infirmary<\/a>\u00a0under Dr. Abby H. Little<\/a> during the early years of Pine Mountain Settlement School, 1916-1918. In Evelyn Wells<\/a>‘ unpublished narrative, History of Health Care at PMSS 1913-1928<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0she lists those nurses as “Miss Euphemia Larrabee of Boston, Miss Margaret Walker, a Canadian, Mrs. Helen Briscoe, here for a few weeks, and Miss Frances Lavender<\/a>, who was here 1918-1919.” About Miss Walker, she writes:<\/p>\n

At the close of Miss Walker\u2018s stay Uncle William Creech<\/a> was in his last illness, and she took entire care of him, escorting him to <\/em>[the Norton Infirmary in] Louisville and staying ther<\/em>e till the end of his life.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Miss Walker was a 1900 graduate of Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing. Listed as a “Private Nurse,” she was one of the 154 graduates of the classes of 1899-1900, according to\u00a0“The 78th Annual Report of the Montreal General Hospital and the Report of Training School for Nurses…for 1899-1900.”<\/p>\n

[pmss_archives_Nurses_1900_walker.jpg]<\/p><\/div>Miss Walker’s travels to Pine Mountain and the very different world that she encountered at the School must have greatly tested her ability to endure and adapt. However, the PMSS Staff Directory<\/a>\u00a0indicates that Miss Walker “gave large amounts until 1926,” suggesting that, after returning to her home in Canada, she remembered and appreciated her experiences as an Infirmary nurse at the\u00a0Pine Mountain School.<\/p>\n
