Mabel Mumford worked out of Pine Mountain Settlement School’s extension at\u00a0Line Fork Settlement<\/a>, Gilley, Kentucky, as a teacher at the Coyle [Coil] Branch school in the years 1921 and 1922. She was from Sturgis, South Dakota.<\/p>\n

The March 1922 issue of Notes from Pine Mountain Settlement School<\/em><\/a>\u00a0includes a mention of Miss Mumford in an article updating readers on Line Fork Settlement activities:<\/p>\n

Since the closing of her school at Coyle Branch in February (1922), Miss Mabel Mumford has gone to the University of Chicago to study, that next year may mean more to the children in her school….\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

According to a letter<\/a> to Katherine Pettit<\/a>, dated February 15, 1922, Miss Mumford was studying at Chicago University for a Master’s Degree and writing “A Historical Sketch of the Educational Work in the Kentucky Mountains.”<\/p>\n

Pine Mountain records indicate that she was also known as “Mrs. Frank Miller,” and had listed her home address as Marionville, Missouri.<\/p>\n

The 1910 U.S. Census lists Mabel Mumford, age 5, as living\u00a0in Sturgis, South Dakota, with her widowed mother, Flora M. Mumford (b. 1851), and brothers, George W. (b. 1889) \u00a0and Edgar (b. 1891). Miss Mumford was born in July 1884.<\/span><\/p>\n
