Halliday&#8217;s memories of her time as a volunteer teacher at Pine Mountain Settlement School had not faded. Her 1997 letters to Robin Lambert, then PMSS director, reflects the lasting fondness and appreciation for the School that many workers, students, and visitors experienced for the School throughout its long history.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>ANNE P. HALLIDAY Correspondence, December 1997<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>From: Miss Anne P. Halliday<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Osterville, MA 02655<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Dear Mr[s]. Lambert,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Pine Mountain Settlement\u00a0School<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Harlan County, Kentucky<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I have read with interest your <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=9966\">report<\/a> for the fall of 1997 . I am enclosing my check for $100.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>For your archives, I plan to send pictures taken during the year 1925-26<\/em>,<em> while working as a volunteer. I lived in <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=262\">Big Log<\/a> in the guest room next to the living room. It was furnished with a fine cherry bed with horsehair mattress, a trundle bed underneath, pitcher and bowl &#8212; often frozen in winter &#8212; and a corner fireplace. I felt fortunate to be in the house with <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=424\">Miss [Katherine] Pettit.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>My duties included teaching seventh-grade geography, civics, agriculture. Fortunately, the manager of the farm helped. During the summer I tried to tutor a teenage boy in math. We were both too tired by evening to make much progress. I also supervised the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1303\">swimming pool<\/a>. This was previously handled by <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=26627\">Miss [Ruth] Gaines<\/a> who didn&#8217;t know how to swim.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I overheard Miss Pettit talking with an illiterate woman who helped supervise a public school. She said, &#8220;I aim to give a powerful lick for education, &#8212; like that man Christopher Columbus &#8212; that man who freed the slaves.&#8221; She had brought some wild turkey eggs, which were hatched under one of our hens. However, they beat themselves to death trying to escape their wire enclosure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Another task was to ride to the schools in that area to teach games. But the children often knew more games than I.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I occasionally spent a night with some family at a distance from the school. One man was wise enough not to sell the rights to any minerals on his property. But he made clear that he believed the world was flat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I enjoyed the folk songs. Have a booklet containing the favorites.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>When I arrived by train I was met by a man and mule for the trip across Pine Mountain with two suitcases tied behind my saddle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Only wish I could visit, but I am ninety-seven and must use a walker or wheelchair.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>With best wishes, sincerely,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(Anne P. HALLIDAY Correspondence, March 1997<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>March 6, 1997<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Dear Sir <\/em>(sic)<em>,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I came upon the enclosed when sorting. I look back with great pleasure and satisfaction to my years as a volunteer at Pine Mountain Settlement School: 6\/25 &#8211; 6\/26.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Had a variety of responsibilities trying to teach agriculture, geography, civics. Supervised the use of the swimming pool; Miss Gaines had supervised it, but could not swim.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The small book of songs I have kept. I hope the school still has copies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The memories of my experience are still vivid. One school (public) trustee came to consult with Miss Pettit. I recall she said, &#8216;I aim to give a powerful lick<\/em> <em>for education\u00a0like that man who freed the slaves, weren&#8217;t his name Christopher Columbus?&#8221; Miss Pettit [felt] it would be rude to correct her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Just sorry I&#8217;ll not be traveling your way. \u00a0At ninety-seven, I am a lot slowed down.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Sincerely yours,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Anne P. Halliday<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>ANNE P. HALLIDAY &#8211; Biography<\/h3>\n<p>Anne Halliday returned to Pine Mountain area at least once after she\u00a0left in June of 1926. A <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=8487\">1930 letter<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=3473\">Dr. Ida Stapleton<\/a>, the School&#8217;s physician, to Katherine Pettit describes that visit:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Miss Halliday and friend Miss Garret came thru on Monday and &#8220;camped&#8221; in our back yard &#8211; They had Nell and Peggy and were going to Caney, Carr Cen [?] and Hindman and possibly to Wooten and Hyden. They had been walking thru the Great Smokies. We enjoyed Miss Halliday especially. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[From &#8220;Darby &amp; Joan,&#8221; (Dr. and Rev. Stapleton), Gilley, KY, August 23, 1930.]<\/p>\n<p>Anne Pillow Halliday was born on January 8, 1900, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her parents were Anne Grey Ridley Halliday and William Parker Holliday, Jr., who was a hotel investor. They had two other children, William Parker III, who died as a child, and William Parker IV, who was three years older than Anne.<\/p>\n<p>The following obituary was posted by GenLookups.com on the website for the Massachusetts Obituary and Death Notice Archive:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Osterville &#8211; Anne Pillow Halliday, 98, a pioneer in social work with children, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Born in Memphis, Tenn., she was a graduate of Madiera School and Vassar College, with a masters degree in social work. Ms. Halliday pursued her career in the Kentucky mountains, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington state.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A longtime summer visitor to the Cape, she moved to her family&#8217;s summer home in Osterville in the 1950s. She was the Cape&#8217;s first social worker for troubled and needy children, and for some time was the only person doing this work in Barnstable County.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Ms. Halliday was an avid outdoorswoman. Her favorite sport was horseback riding and she also liked sailing, canoeing, hiking, bicycling and camping. She also enjoyed reading and the theater. After her retirement, she continued her interest and involvement in Osterville matters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Surviving are two nephews, William P.
