This story was collected by Alice Cobb,<\/a> PMSS secretary, fundraiser and teacher (1932-1952), and later PMSS trustee. The following appeared in\u00a0PMSS\u00a0Notes<\/em><\/a>\u00a0of November\u00a0<\/span>1927, vol. 11, no. 8.<\/span><\/p>\n

TROUBLE AND SATISFACTION<\/p>\n

[The taxi driver, as he brings two workers over a newly opened road on Big Black Mountain,
\ntells a tale of his boyhood in the mountains.}<\/p>\n

ONE TIME when I was just a lad,\u00a0a man over in Virginia come\u00a0along and asked me and another boy to help him go and take\u00a0some cows across Black Mountain to his\u00a0mother. Hit was November and about noon, and after a little snack to eat we started off.\u00a0When we come to the top of the mountain\u00a0we found snow, though we hadn’t seen none\u00a0that year down below, and hit was hard going. We missed the trail and went right\u00a0through the woods and we kept on a-goin’\u00a0down the mountain, right down that branch we passed back there, till along about one in the\u00a0morning we begun to see a light a-glimmerin’ way down below. When we come\u00a0nearer, we see that hit shined through the chinks of an old house, and hit was fire-light. Hit looked mighty good to us boys!\u00a0We had started when the day was warm and\u00a0hadn’t no coats over our shirts. We had\u00a0sweated and then froze, and we was awful\u00a0cold.<\/p>\n

When we come to the cabin, the man pecked on the door and a woman inside says, “Who’s that?” “Hit’s me.” “Is hit you,\u00a0John “Yes, hit’s me.” Then she come and\u00a0opened the door a crack and looked out, and\u00a0we could see that good fire on the hearth,\u00a0but we had to just look at hit while her and John talked more. He says, “Well, Maw, I’ve been fixin’ to come for a long\u00a0time, but my baby died and we had to bury\u00a0hit.” “Didn’t know you had ary baby,” said\u00a0his mother, and then she said, “But that\u00a0ain’t nothin’; we buried your brother Rufe\u00a0today.” And all he says was, “Humph!”<\/p>\n

Well, finally John says, “We’d like mighty\u00a0well to warm by the fire, Maw,” so at last we\u00a0got to come in, and the old woman she says,\u00a0“They’s some corn licker behind the chimney,” but John says, “Fix us some supper,\u00a0Maw.” “Well,” she says, “We haint got nothing left to eat, they’s been so much company\u00a0today, with the burying and all.” But John\u00a0he insisted, so she called the two girls from\u00a0the back room \u2014 great, long footed gals they\u00a0was, old maids — all of twenty. They fixed the supper. And I want to tell you what all we had to eat. There was a ham that\u00a0hadn’t hardly been cut into, and biscuits as\u00a0big as your fist-es, baked in a Dutch oven, and\u00a0they was a platter of slabs of honey, every\u00a0one of them weighing as much as five pounds!<\/p>\n

Then we went to bed. I guess them gals\u00a0had to sleep before the fire the rest of the\u00a0night, for they gave us the bed in the back\u00a0room. I can remember now how the feather\u00a0mattress was so high, you had to climb into\u00a0hit with a ladder.\u00a0Yes. folks lived well then, when they\u00a0could hunt, and had plenty of land. But\u00a0they’d made six thousand dollars gathering\u00a0sang (ginseng) and the old man was off at\u00a0the very time, buying a farm in Tennessee.\u00a0The old woman talked about moving. She\u00a0says, “They say down there on that farm\u00a0hit’s level, you can see a man clear from\u00a0one end of the land to the other. I’Il\u00a0be\u00a0mighty sorry to leave these grand old mountains, though\u00a0I haint never seed nothing but\u00a0trouble and satisfaction all my life. Trouble\u00a0and satisfaction \u2014that ‘s all there is to livin.'”<\/p>\n
