Alice Cobb had a keen ear for stories and for language.\u00a0 Abner Boggs was one of the first contacts Alice Cobb made in the community and she set about jotting down his quotes, stories, homilies and other spiritual edifications. The collected material brings the reader near as close as will be to the folklore and language found in the Pine Mountain valley.<\/p>\n

Of the Harris girl\u00a0<\/strong>— she is just like a mule. The prankiest youngun you ever did see and all the while lookin’ just like<\/em> a angel<\/em>!<\/p>\n

When I was a young man an a bachelor and a\u00a0beau<\/em>
\nCourtin’ every girl with a flattering tongue —<\/em>
\nThe lies I told was\u00a0one hundred and ten.<\/em>
\nTold her I’d marry her but didn’t say when.<\/em>
\nThe kisses I give her was a hundred and ten.<\/em>
\nTold her I’d marry but didn’t tell her when.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Monday morning I married me a wife<\/em>
\nFiddled and danced till I never saw the like<\/em>
\nI tuned up my fiddle so merry did I play<\/em>
\nThinkin’ to myself it would never come <\/em>day.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning to my great surprise<\/em>
\nAbout half an hour <\/em>a’for\u00a0the sun did rise<\/em>
\nShe <\/em>tuned up her pipe and scolded me more<\/em>
\nThan I ever was scolded in my <\/em>life time before.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Wednesday morning I went to the woods<\/em>
\nThinking to myself she would never do no good<\/em>
\nI cut me some whips in the Horn Bean green<\/em>
\nThinking they <\/em>was\u00a0the <\/em>tuffest that I ever had seen.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Thursday morning I carried them home<\/em>
\nThinking to\u00a0myself she’s a wife of my own.<\/em>
\nBut little did I think when I laid them by<\/em>
\nHopin’ next morning to have them to try.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Friday morning I banged her well.<\/em>
\nHer tongue did run like a clapper in a bell.<\/em>
\nAnd I told her the terms and the terms might be<\/em>
\nThe devil might have her next morning for me.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Saturday morning the devil came<\/em>
\nAnd carried her off in a shower of rain<\/em>
\nOh knock about your brandy bottle my best friend<\/em>
\nFor my long courtship’s come to an end.<\/em><\/p>\n

[Abner says] “Gertrude, that is what your man is going to say about you sometime. Wouldn’t you hate awful bad for the old man to send a order to the devil for you? You sing one now, Gertrude. “[we are not sure who Gertrude<\/strong> is].<\/em><\/p>\n

God never created one person with more advantage than anybody else. <\/em>Him that <\/em>hain’t\u00a0got no voice to sing can talk hit off<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There was the old lady\u00a0said Sabbath school was nice. While they had them in <\/em>thar\u00a0hit kept them out of <\/em>other mischief.<\/p>\n

\n

I got a few ill wills but I don’t deserve them. Every time they catch\u00a0me singin’ they go to mockin’ at <\/em>hit.<\/p>\n

I wished I was in Boston City<\/em>
\nWhere all <\/em>them\u00a0girls they are so pretty.<\/em>
\nIf I didn’t have a time it would be pity —<\/em>

First time I saw Sally Betty Eel<\/em>
\nJust come <\/em>bevil on a <\/em>booza reel<\/em><\/p>\n

\nOh there I would sit and cry my fill<\/em>
\nAnd every drop weighed a ton a meal<\/em>

I wish I was a married man<\/em>
\nAnd had a wife whose name was Fan<\/em>
\nI would sing her a song on this same plan<\/em>

One time a man had four <\/em>yoke of cattle. One was [a] Campbellite, one was Presbyterian, one was Methodist and one was old <\/em>hard shell Baptist.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Presbyterians held their heads so high they <\/em>couldn’t pull nothin’. The Methodists was always down on their knees, and the hard shell Baptists was down by the river holdin’ close communion and the Campbellites couldn’t keep them away from the baptizin’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

You can take a devil and baptize him and he goes in a dry devil and you bring out a wet one. That is the difference<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

I have paid attention to things for the last fifty years and I never have noticed that the preacher’s boys <\/em>was not the worst in the country<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

He would tough it out the whole endurin’ night<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

I can say somethin’ or ‘<\/em>nother that nobody else can’t say. I have had three sets of half-brothers, nary real brother <\/em>nor sister, all in one gang. But was with a mule whip or a hand saw. Every time he struck me with that hand saw it said kink, kink!<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

He would tell you nothin’ only what he meant and just as shore as he told you anything <\/em>hit was that way<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Good and possible and harmless only just in prankin’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Whenever one of my youngsters is up at Harris’s, I feel just as safe as if she was at home<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Back when <\/em>me and my wife was goin’ together I was free and jovial with the girls and she was to the boys and after we were married it was the same way.<\/em><\/p>\n

We <\/em>wuz just like chickens that <\/em>is in a fight — had our eye on each other all the time we <\/em>wuz in company with each other<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

She was a good kind person and the night never did get too dark or too cold nor it rained too hard for me to get out and go for her or do <\/em>fer her<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

I hate it and I know I can’t help it, but if I could have I would <\/em>have hope it<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

I was like the little boy that clumb up in the top of the tree and for <\/em>fear I might get on a rotten limb and it <\/em>break.<\/p>\n

\n

The only thing I could say was she was always good and nice in my presence and good to help in time of need<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

I said “Now <\/em>hain’t it a matter of fact that you are the grandmother and her the granddaughter. She looks to be the girl and you the grandmother.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

I been havin’ about all I could handle lately <\/em>wait’n on J.F.\u00a0They is on the mend a little but if they eat the <\/em>least thing they oughtn’t to they will die. I have had to furnish them coal, wood, meal, and go to the store for them. <\/em>I been takin’ them milk and if I can’t take it Paul does, and if Paul <\/em>don’t lend a hand Eul does and if Eul <\/em>don’t take it, Ille does.<\/em> [Paul, Eul<\/strong>and Ille<\/strong> are some of the Abner Boggs children.]<\/p>\n

\n

They never was a monkey let out of a show that was <\/em>prankier than that boy. They <\/em>is some places down there that if there is anything goin’ to get done the women would have to do it so they just make <\/em>a agreement. I reckon, that neither one of them to do nothin’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Marriage is either a life of trouble or a life of satisfaction and if it is a life of satisfaction after one of them is gone there ain’t no more satisfaction for the other.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is the oldest <\/em>bullheadest man in this country that anybody <\/em>knowed about, that hated mighty bad for her to go. (about himself\u00a0and his wife).<\/em><\/p>\n

I want to tell you these things so that you a young girl <\/em>don’t get caught up by none o’ these young bucks. (Abner to me)<\/em><\/p>\n

He jumped on me as I was a-<\/em>travelin‘ along on my mule a-<\/em>singin‘ to myself, and he held [?] me up against a rock and I <\/em>retch for my knife and the only thing that saved him from havin’ his innards cut out was —-<\/em><\/p>\n

The law wouldn’t a had nothin’ to say about a man takin’ his own part. I <\/em>packs a pistol to <\/em>pertect myself whenever I am in his company.<\/em><\/p>\n

Some say <\/em>HItler is the monster mentioned in the Bible but that’s a lie. It says in the 13th Chapter of Revelations that a monster <\/em>come up out of the sea and then went down in the sea and come up again. And <\/em>HItler hain’t never been down in the sea yet <\/em>n’order to come up. But I reckon he’s a mean man though<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Air times outside harder than in here? Well, time was when I thought I’d pack me a poke and go travelin’ for a night or a day at a time. But I reckon I’ll be satisfied just to stay home<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Me and Lucinda<\/strong> married (date) and didn’t neither one of us have nothin’. But we battled and bumped along and inside o’ three <\/em>year we <\/em>was sellin’ property<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

What’s tore my <\/em>heart strings in two<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

More bit off than I could chew up and <\/em>swaller.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

Prankin’ and playin’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Big square built<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

I’ll be 70 at my birth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

Young folks <\/em>grows up wrong because the old ones <\/em>raises ’em up <\/em>that a-way. They <\/em>don’t set no good example<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Anybody’s welcome around me that ain’t had no liquor but anybody with <\/em>liquor he can’t stay away<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

They’s going to be two mighty fine preachers and if the Lord be <\/em>wiling we’re going to have them preach our boy’s funeral Sunday morning the first of November. We’re going to have the law there. [See FUNERALIZING<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n
