The “Red Booklet” documents 50 years of one extended Hall Family in and around Viper, Kentucky in Perry County. The history centers on the Hall Family descendants of John Hall Sr.<\/strong> who was born at sea and was grandfather to Philip Whisman Hall<\/strong> whose progeny is scattered throughout eastern Kentucky.<\/p>\n

HALL FAMILY: Transcription of PREFACE to the Hall Family Red Booklet<\/h3>\n

“Much information has been documented at various\u00a0times about the P.W. Hall Family<\/strong> of Viper, Kentucky, and since we are celebrating fifty years of Hall Reunions these facts we want to share with you.<\/p>\n

“There is never a time that any family history would be complete with all the facts and dates, but several people have been working continuously keeping our history up-to-date as good as possible. We\u00a0are going to submit to you what we have in hopes to\u00a0gain more of our family who are interested in knowing their genealogy.<\/p>\n

“John M. Hall<\/strong> began in 1927 to compile records\u00a0of the ten children of Philip Whisman (P.W.) Hall<\/strong> Family<\/strong>.\u00a0He wrote,<\/p>\n

This compilation is not in any one sense complete. However, it is undertaken with the material at hand to tabulate and list those of our family\u00a0so as to give consecutive lineage of the past settlers of our family in the United States down to the\u00a0present time. My own life has touched the<\/em> life<\/em> of\u00a0my grandfather, whose life has touched that of his\u00a0grandfather who lived in the American Colonies of\u00a0the British Empire.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Our family is old, but we have at present no\u00a0record of our immediate ancestors any earlier than\u00a0the arrival of John Hall Sr.<\/strong> about 1765, a baby born\u00a0at sea whose father’s name we do not know.\u00a0This record is being written with the hope that\u00a0as the years go on there shall be no breaks in the chain of our family history. That this record shall\u00a0continue to be kept through the succeeding generations\u00a0of Halls to other generations in the future — this is\u00a0my sincere hope.”<\/p>\n

JOHN HALL SR<\/strong>., the grandfather of Philip Whisman Hall<\/strong>\u00a0was born at sea while his parents imigrated\u00a0[sic]<\/em> to the\u00a0Colonies of America. The family settled in Virginia\u00a0on the Yadkin River near the head, and JOHN HALL JR.<\/strong>\u00a0was born there July 15, 1776. The mother of John Jr.\u00a0was Polly Hash<\/strong>. Shortly after John Hall Jr. was born\u00a0the family moved to Ash County, Virginia, where they lived until the year 1805.<\/p>\n

The John Hall Sr. family moved again to Powell\u00a0Valley, Lee County, Virginia. John Hall Sr. died\u00a0in 1826.<\/p>\n

John Hall Jr. married on March 9, 1819,\u00a0Elizabeth Whisman<\/strong> (b. June 22, 1800) and they had [the following] eight children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

John Hall Jr. died in 1837. The mother of P.W. Hall,\u00a0Elizabeth Whisman Hall, then moved to Kentucky where\u00a0she died in 1855.<\/p>\n

JOSHUA HALL<\/strong>, born May 6, 1830, was married 10-18, 1856, to Martha Williams<\/strong> and they had one daughter.<\/p>\n

JOHN HENRY HALL<\/strong>, born 9-20-1835, affectionately\u00a0known as “Uncle Burt” married on June 3, 1855, to\u00a0Abigail Branson<\/strong> and they had [the following] two children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Uncle Burt was a veteran of the Civil War. He\u00a0was widely known as a fiddler of old-time tunes and marches. He was also known in his community for the practice of midwifery and herb medicines.<\/p>\n

The other children of John Hall Jr. (except P.W.\u00a0Hall) have been erased with time and of them we have\u00a0no further record at this time.<\/p>\n

Philip Whisman Hall’s family<\/strong> starts at this era\u00a0and continues throughout this book [Red Booklet]….<\/p>\n

PHILIP WHISMAN HALL<\/strong>, born May 27, 1823, married,\u00a0on September 3, 1846, to Elizabeth Branson<\/strong> and they\u00a0had nine children and adopted one.\u00a0P.W. Hall was the name he was known as, being a\u00a0pioneer, surveyor and lawyer. After coming to Ky.\u00a0he traded much in lands and timber near Viper, Ky.<\/p>\n
