HATTIE STURGILL, Student, 1938 – 1943<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hattie Fay Sturgill, one of three children in the Riley Sturgill family to attend Pine Mountain Settlement School, appears to have been more active in the School’s activities than were her siblings, James and Margie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples of her extra-curricular pursuits are recorded in various documents in the PMSS Archives. According to<\/span> The Conifer 1941<\/span><\/a>, page 17, Hattie wrote a scene for the Co-op play, \u201cCooperation Around the World,\u201d which was reprinted in The Conifer<\/em> with the title, \u201cKagawa in the Slums.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

During the years Hattie was a student, she worked with Grace Rood<\/a> at the School Infirmary<\/a>, according to the listing of Boarding School Students<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span> script<\/span><\/a> of the Community Group Assembly on May 20, 1942, casts Hattie as “Master of Ceremonies,” introducing each of seven students who described the work of the Community Group and the Co-op program at Pine Mountain. Their narratives were to accompany a film made by <\/span>Ray and Virginia Garner,<\/b> who were contracted through the Harmon Foundation to film the unique educational program activities at the School. One of the participants, Flora Mae Ford,<\/strong> a school visitor, described a project assisted by Hattie:<\/span><\/p>\n

At one of the schools, the children were thrilled at doing some real acting in front of a movie camera. Very willingly did they go over and over singing games \u2014 with Hattie leading \u2014 and Mr. [Ray] Garner grinding away at the camera crank.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The program<\/a> for the \u00a0Class of 1942 Commencement lists Hattie as one of the students who participated in the ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hattie graduated from Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1943, but the School lost track of her after she left.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hattie Sturgill: FAMILY AND HOME LIFE<\/h3>\n

As with all of the Student Application Blanks that were submitted to Pine Mountain Settlement School and stored in the School\u2019s archives, the Sturgill siblings’ applications contain a wealth of information about who they were and how they lived.<\/p>\n

According to Hattie’s application, she was born the fourth child in a family of nine children in Viper (Perry County), Kentucky, in 1922. As of the 1940 U.S. Census, the two oldest sisters were\u00a0Oma<\/strong>\u00a0(deceased; born in c. 1918) and\u00a0Zola<\/strong>\u00a0(age 21), who was married and working as a housemaid in Hazard.\u00a0 Marjorie<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cMargie,\u201d 17) attended PMSS from 1939 to 1940, then returned to live at home.\u00a0Hattie<\/strong>\u00a0(18) was a boarding student at Pine Mountain (1938-1943). The brothers were James (14),\u00a0Bernis<\/strong>\u00a0(11),\u00a0Merril<\/strong>\u00a0(7),\u00a0Roger<\/strong>\u00a0(4) and\u00a0Jackie Howard Sturgill<\/strong>\u00a0(2).<\/p>\n

The family lived at Delphia, Kentucky, in Perry County where her father,\u00a0Riley Sturgill<\/strong>, (born c. 1891), worked on a rented farm of 400 acres as well as on building roads and at a lumber yard. Her mother,\u00a0Nora (Baker) Sturgill<\/strong>\u00a0(born in 1906), kept house.\u00a0The main crops on the farm were corn, potatoes and beans. They had \u201c5 head of stock.\u201d The family lived in a 4-room log house that was\u00a0heated by \u201cgrates\u201d and lighted by kerosene. They got their water from a well.<\/p>\n

In this case, he has identified the Collection’s photo of a nurse in uniform as his mother. He writes the following in an email dated May 10, 2017:<\/p>\n

My mother, Hattie Faye Sturgill as she was known then, but Maxilyn for the rest of her life, had just graduated from an LVN [licensed vocational nurse] program in California, about 1958 or 1960 when she was Maxilyn Moon. She may have sent PMSS the picture as part of her correspondence with the school in requesting transcripts.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
