Wells<\/a> in her address at Harvard University on Appalachian Folksongs. Katherine Pettit sent Josiah&#8217;s songs to Professor Kittredge for the <em>Journal of American Folklore<\/em>. Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Prague, Czechoslovakia, inviting him back to PMSS. <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=29007\">KATHERINE PETTIT CORRESPONDENCE 1920<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 1922 letter (#023) to Katherine Pettit referred to <\/span><b>Newel Combs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a newly arrived PMSS student. <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=29011\">KATHERINE PETTIT CORRESPONDENCE 1922<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Rufus Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served in the U.S. Navy, according to a list compiled by a <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1636\">1947 issue<\/a> of <em>The Pine Cone<\/em>. WWII MILITARY SERVICE (draft)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An article about Chris Anderson in <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1178\">NOTES 1940<\/a> (page 2) includes Anderson\u2019s story about <\/span><b>Sary Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a man who \u201cdied one evening and came back to life the next morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newspaper clippings (dated March 24, 1912), included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=39199\">PMSS SCRAPBOOK BEFORE 1929<\/a>, show two letters to the editor from Manon Cornett in which he questions vigilante actions used to quell mob violence by officials of Woodford County, KY. His biography states that \u201cManon Cornett was married to Clara Belle \u2018Pet\u2019 Eversole, a daughter of Joseph Castle Eversole and <\/span><b>Susan Combs<\/b> <b>Eversole<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her father, a prominent attorney, was one of the victims of the infamous French-Eversole Feuds in Hazard in 1909.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eli Hall and <\/span><b>Susan (Combs)<\/b> <b>Hall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the grandparents of first cousins <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=26408\">Fern Hall<\/a> and Susie Hall, PMSS students and workers beginning in the 1930s. <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=5528\">SUSIE HALL ANGEL<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dorothy H. Stiles, an employee at Hindman (KY) Settlement School, wrote in her \u201cKentucky 1915\u201d journal about a horseback ride to Pine Mountain. During the trip, they stayed overnight with the <\/span><b>Spencer Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 family. The narrative describes their home and hospitality and mentions Spencer Combs\u2019 son as a \u201ctooth dentist.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=3164\">DOROTHY H. STILES &#8211; \u201cKENTUCKY 1915.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Susanna Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is among the \u201cauthors\u201d listed in the Berea College Appalachian Museum Oral History Collection. <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=42678\">BIBLIOGRAPHY PINE MOUNTAIN SETTLEMENT SCHOOL<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>S.S. Combs<\/strong> wrote a newspaper article \u201cHistory of the Combs Family\u201d c. 1922. Common names in the area are <\/span><b>Combs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Brashear, Whitaker, Woods, and more.
