Pine Mountain Settlement School<\/strong>
\nSeries 10:\u00a0BUILT ENVIRONMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

MILKHOUSE, 1936 – 1949(?)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Milkhouse\u00a0was an out-growth of the dairy program at the School. It was constructed\u00a0by students at the School in 1936 to give\u00a0a sanitary site\u00a0to hold and process the milk from the Ayrshire dairy herd. it was\u00a0very small in scale.<\/p>\n

The structure was\u00a0roughly square in shape\u00a0and originally had a pyramidal roof and a poured concrete floor. The facade, which faced north, had two entrances. Windows, casement in type, were located\u00a0on the three remaining sides of the building. The building materials included uncut field stone and board and batten upper section. The stone came from a plentiful supply pulled from the very stony farmyard next door. The Milkhouse\u00a0sat\u00a0between the west end of the Barn<\/a> and Farm House<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today the building is in ruin. The stone walls and\u00a0some remains of a brick chimney flue at the rear of the building are all that can be found at its original location.<\/p>\n
