For many years, she maintained a correspondence with workers at the School, with community members, and with other Board members. Her many roles and correspondents have led to a scattered body of material. However, the bulk of her correspondence is filed under &#8220;Board of Trustees Correspondence&#8221; in BOXES 17-19 and is organized by year.<\/p>\r\n<p>Note that the formal Board of Trustees&#8217; (BOT) correspondence does not begin until 1924. Prior years are included in the Director&#8217;s Correspondence.<\/p>\r\n<p>Additional correspondence may be included in planning documents for the two satellite settlements, the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2891\">Medical Settlement at Big Laurel<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2992\">Line Fork Settlement<\/a>, as well as under files for the individual buildings she designed. The original signed copies were sent to the correspondents. The initials at the bottom left of most PMSS letters indicate the writer (along with initials of the secretary). In the letters on this page, &#8220;EZ&#8221; are the initials for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1696\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethel de Long Zande<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u201cKP\u201d indicate <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=424\">Katherine Pettit.<\/a> The following list of contents is in chronological order.]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3>January &#8211; March 1920<\/h3>\r\n<p><b>001-001a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> January 21, 1920. Two-page letter to Mary (Rockwell) from (unsigned, likely Ethel de Long Zande), who [<\/span><b>001]<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encloses a letter possibly from a donor; provides updates about locating the Boys\u2019 House:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8230;[We decided to build it back and to the right of the Slab House. I know there are things to regret about the location, but it seems the only one on the school grounds for the boys. I think it is rather a disappointment to Miss Pettit, and yet I feel sure the relief she feels in getting rid of the Slab House will make up to her for having such close neighbors. The building as we laid it out will be about 96\u2019 long, a main part with two wings, one a play room open to the rafters and with a sawdust floor, the other, sleeping porches and dressing rooms for sixteen boys. The (?) will be housed in the main part of the building. \u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary is invited to visit and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201csee the plans before the thing gets started.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The building is estimated to cost $8,000; Mr. Duncan donated $5,000 and may be sending the remainder. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She mentions that her mother, who had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ckidney poisoning\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> at Christmas <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwas carried over the mountain just a week ago, and is now at Dr. Carroll\u2019s sanitarium in Asheville.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/i><b>[001a]<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tells about Luigi\u2019s (<a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1986\">Luigi Zande)<\/a> improvements to the road, from the tool-house to the bottom; Angela\u2019s (<a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=14842\">Angela Melville<\/a> ) leaving for a speaking trip; and a mention of Berto (Ethel and Luigi Zande&#8217;s son).\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postscript: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;[W]e are in three upper rooms of the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=469\">schoolhouse<\/a>, and just delighted with it. The steamfitters are finishing up the rest as fast as they can. Water is connected, and coat-hooks are up, and steps and doors in place, so we feel very much finished.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><b>002<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MISSING IMAGE<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><b>003<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> February 3, 1920. To Mary in Kansas City, Mo., from (unsigned, likely Zande). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe plans <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good and Luigi is retained.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tells about leaving for her campaigning trip to Chicago and Angela\u2019s to New York; receiving a donation from Miss Bartstow\u2019s school; PMSS&#8217;s need for money to buy an electric light plant and for the girls\u2019 and nurse\u2019s houses. Mentions that her mother has anemia; plans to visit her and Helen (Ethel&#8217;s sister). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlice Andrews is coming to take care of Berto.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><b>004-004a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> March 20, 1920. Two-page letter to Mary from EZ (Zande), who is sending <em>Outlook<\/em> and <em>Survey<\/em> articles and some photos to help with her talk; enclosing a recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMSS Notes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article and financial statement. Zande provides ideas for her talk: annual subscribers, the Doctor, <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2136\">Marguerite Butler<\/a>\u2019s Extension work (at <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2992\">Line Fork Settlement<\/a>), Miss Storer at <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2891\">Big Laurel (Medical Settlement),<\/a> the need for $800 to build a one-room house for Extension workers. Zande hopes to raise money for a new project:<em> \u201ca plan for a home for tiny, motherless children, too small to take into our regular families.\u201d<\/em> Tells about turning away fathers who bring motherless children to the School and wonders how to get the right staff and cows for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cbabes.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Mentions <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2181\">Miss (Celia) Cathcart<\/a>, who is replacing Miss (Evelyn) Wells. Berto had his first birthday this week.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>005<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MISSING IMAGE<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3>April &#8211; July 1920<\/h3>\r\n<p><b>006<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> April 21, 1920. To Mary from EZ (Zande).<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI went to <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=4629\">May and Leon Deschamps<\/a>\u2019s wedding at Viper and broke three ribs because [of] a new saddle\u2026.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tells of Angela Melville\u2019s interest in starting work under the <a href=\"https:\/\/mssdar.org\/about-us\/\">D.A.R.<\/a> in the Ozarks; Angela is currently at Neighborhood House in Louisville and doing fundraising for PMSS\u2019s extension work and endowment. Hopes Mary\u2019s sister Bertha will visit and stay at <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=6617\">Open House<\/a>; encourages Mary to visit in the summer. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want you to see the \u2018Med. To Mary from EZ (Zande), who agrees to write a testimonial for Mary; hopes Mary can go to France. She will try to arrange for a cottage for Guiliana and hopes she will play with Berto. Mentions Bertha at Open House, Mrs. Paiste\u2019s upcoming visit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>008<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> June 25, 1920. To <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy dear Mary\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Miss Mary Rockwell) from (unsigned, possibly Katherine Pettit), who missed Mary when her family (sister Bertha and Mrs. Ostertag?) were visiting the School and staying at Open House. An exhibition is planned for Bertha\u2019s photos. Mentions Sue Huntingdon and asks about Miss Ruth Huntington. Asks help in supplying hot water for <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=262\">Big Log<\/a>. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEthel and Mr. Zande don\u2019t seem to be able to help me out on this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><b>009-010<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> July 29, 1920. Two-page letter to \u201cMiss (Mary) Rockwell\u201d from KP (Katherine Pettit), who thanks Mary for her July 5th letter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018telling me all about what your Susan had been doing in regard to Caney Creek.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pettit expresses her wish that Mary could be at Line Fork, getting windows for the log house <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwhere my niece and <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=6602\">Miss (Isabel) McLennan<\/a> are living.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs. Fields, the trustee, still needs a teacher; she and Miss Butler took her a wagon-load of supplies. Mentions gifts that community folks, including Nance Holbrook and Bert Smith, brought for the school.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t you think it is just our plan of work and play and supervision that makes our children different from the rest outside? We do very intensive work with the children and that is why we get these results. If people who are training children outside weren\u2019t so interested in selfish pleasure, plays, high-heeled shoes, powdering their noses and so forth, maybe they could get more interested in development of children\u2019s character and manners.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pettit describes the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cworkings on Line Fork for the new house.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mentions receiving wedding cards from former student Josiah Combs, now in France during the war. Pettit describes the work at PMSS that Marguerite Butler has been doing. Asks for Emily to forward Mary\u2019s letters so PMSS staff can read them. Angela Melville raised $4,000 in four weeks for the endowment fund.
