“House in the Woods” was the first building constructed on\u00a0the campus of Pine Mountain Settlement School. (Old Log<\/a> was older, but\u00a0had been\u00a0moved<\/span>\u00a0to the School and re-constructed on its current\u00a0site.)<\/p>\n

House in the Woods was constructed to serve<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as a shelter for the first classes and recreation and community events held at the School.\u00a0It was located<\/span> on the south-facing mountain above Farm House<\/a> and the Barn<\/a>, roughly where the Jubilee<\/a> cottage now sits. Since it\u00a0was next to the road to Line Fork as that road\u00a0passed through the campus, the building was easily accessed\u00a0by the\u00a0community coming from either Big Laurel or the Line Fork area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Angela Melville Album II, Part I. “[?] House in the Woods” [melv_II_album_097.jpg]<\/p><\/div>“House” does not describe the actual<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>structure which was more a pavilion, consisting of one large platform of about 40 feet by\u00a040 feet. The pavilion housed an organ used<\/span> for music and dance events. It had railing around much of the platform to protect users from falling into the woods that surrounded the building.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remarkably, the building held together for many years and was used<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for a variety of community events. By\u00a0the late 1930s it finally had deteriorated enough to necessitate its removal\u00a0<\/span>from the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of earliest classes were held in the House in the Woods and many of the early images show children in various recreational activity at the School, particularly, dancing.<\/p>\n
