Otis and Esther Robinson Hoskins.\u00a0After serving stateside in a U.S. Navy medical unit during World War II and graduating in 1950 from Davidson College, a liberal arts college near Charlotte, North Carolina, he joined the family-owned Enterprise Publishing Company, publisher of the Harlan Daily Enterprise<\/em>. He began working in the news and advertising departments and eventually became editor and vice president during his 20 years with the company.<\/p>\n In 1971 Mr. Hoskins joined the\u00a0Corbin Times-Tribune,\u00a0<\/em>of which he was the major stockholder. In addition to serving as president of the newspaper, he wrote a weekly column, “The Springboard,” that covered a variety of topics, including personal experiences and politics.\u00a0On June 10, 1973, he wrote “Mountain Man’s Mark of Greatness,” a biography of William Creech<\/a>, the original donor of land for the Pine Mountain Settlement School. He began his article with these words:<\/span><\/p>\n The hills and mountains of Southeastern Kentucky have produced some great men — some of whom have become known far beyond the bounds of the hills for their accomplishments. There have been others, equally great in my opinion, whose names are remembered by only a relatively few in a rather limited area. One such man was William Creech Sr.,\u00a0born Oct. 30,1845, on the Poor Fork of the Cumberland River in Harlan County and died in the same county in 1918 not too far from his place of birth.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n During his newspaper years, Mr. Hoskins was active in the Kentucky Press Association, serving on the executive committee. The Corbin paper was sold in the 1980s\u00a0to Worrell Newspapers Inc., publisher of two other newspapers in Kentucky.<\/p>\n Throughout his adult years, Mr. Hoskins was also active in his community, working with the Boy Scouts of America and serving as a founding member and past president of Harlan County Jaycees, a member of the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Advisory Council of the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital, and president and state officer of Harlan and Corbin Kiwanis Clubs. In addition, he served 43 years on the Board of Trustees at Pine Mountain Settlement School.<\/p>\n Mr. Hoskins was deacon and an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church. In 1991, he was Moderator of the Transylvania Presbytery and also served several years on the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency in Buckhorn, Kentucky.<\/p>\n He died on August 1, 2007, and was buried in the Pleasantville United Church of Christ Cemetery, in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.\u00a0He was survived by his wife, the former Anne Klein, and three of their four children: David of Corbin, Kentucky, Caryn (Dr. Warren Overbey) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mary Anne of Austin, Texas. Their son James Carlisle Hoskin died in 1993 in a hiking accident.<\/span><\/p>\n His four grandchildren are Katherine and Mack Hoskins and Carly and Caroline Overbey.
