002  Wampler, Helen<\/strong>, Midway Jr. College, Midway, KY, from Ethel de Long Zande. February 22. Describes de Long and Pettit’s arrival at PMSS and their first stay “down at Big Laurel.” de Long Zande notes that they “… stayed down at Mr. Nolan’s when we first came and the first building was Old Log<\/a>, where I went to live with the children as soon as it was finished. …We had just a handful of children living down at the Nolan place,  a couple of boys or so.”<\/p>\n

003 Watkins, Sheldon<\/strong>, Dr. Louisville, KY, from Ethel de Long Zande. March 1928. Regarding student, Ollie Turner, who needs sinuses examined for possible surgery.<\/p>\n

004 Weil, Gertrude<\/strong>, Goldsboro, NC from Secretary [?]  January 3. Acknowledges Weil and Miss Oettinger [Ettinger ?] for their generous gift and says it will be applied to Christmas expenses as the designated Far House terrace was a popular cause and was well subscribed. <\/span>Notes that the teacher recommended by Weil came but is not well and that a reserve is in mind.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

005 Weil, Gertrude<\/strong>, Goldsboro, NC from Secretary [probably Evelyn K. Wells ?]  April 19.  Regrets that Ethel was not present for Weil’s visit last year. Notes the death of Ethel de Long Zande<\/a> in 1928 and is thankful “…that her days or real illness were so few. Describes the arrangements for the Zande children with Ethel’s sister Helen in Wilmington, NC. Wells thanks Weil for her annual subscription.<\/span><\/p>\n

006 Weil, Gertrude<\/strong>, Goldsboro, NC from Evelyn K. Wells, Secretary. June 15.  Letter regarding the Memorial Fund created for Ethel de Long Zande, Wells notes that the possibility of PMSS not going on following the death of Ethel de Long Zande in not real and that she [Wells] will not “uproot” and move on. She describes the coming of Angela Melville<\/a> to PMSS to take on responsibilities in education and Office and that Miss Jordan is writing an article in the July Smith Quarterly<\/em> about Mrs. Zande. <\/span><\/p>\n

009 Wells, Mary,<\/strong> Plainfield, NJ from Angela Melville. October 11. Response to Wells about non-receipt of Notes <\/em>for distribution to an interested Association due to oversight following changes in Office and death of Ethel de Long Zande.<\/p>\n

010 Wells, Philip B.<\/strong>, The Tobey Homestead, Wareham, MA, from Evelyn K. Wells. June 28.  Thanks him for donation and assures him that the standards (at the school) will go on.<\/p>\n

013 White, Rowland H<\/strong>., Wooton, KY. [Carcassone School ?] from Angela Melville. October 22.<\/span> <\/span>Thanks <\/span>him for letter and visit of the team [basketball?] from [Carcassone?] to PMSS. Assures him that PMSS would like to send<\/span> <\/span>a team <\/span>of boys as well as girls to his school. She notes that Mr. Argetsinger will bring the teams. <\/span><\/p>\n

014-15 <\/span>White, Rowland H<\/strong>., Wooton, KY. from Angela Melville. October 22. White suggests that November 9th is best date and that boys and girls cannot be easily accommodated at the same time [in Carcassone] due to transportation and housing. (2 pags) <\/span><\/p>\n

016 White, Rowland H.<\/strong>, Wooton, KY, from Angela Melville. October 29. Regarding arrangements for sports events among the associated schools. Melville suggests including Red Bird in a discussion of terms of sports engagements. <\/span><\/p>\n

017 Whittaker, Mabel,<\/strong> Chicago, IL from Evelyn K. Wells,. March 30.  Alerts Miss Whittaker that Caroline Heinz will get in touch with her in Chicago to seek help in finding PMSS Office help.<\/p>\n

018 Wilcox, Mrs. William<\/strong>, from Ethel de Long Zande [?]. January 12.  Acknowledges the generous donations of Christmas gifts for school children. She tells story of one boy who was sent away with a stack of Library books which he was to return. However the boy sent Zande a note “saying his mother wanted to read them too, so he was taking good care of them, and had thumb-cards in <\/em>every one. (A thumb-card<\/strong>) you hold under your thumb as you read, to keep your thumb from smearing the page!)<\/em><\/p>\n

019 Wilson, Alfred Lee, Rev.<\/strong>, First Presbyterian Church, Canton, Ohio, from Ethel de Long Zande. February 27.  Acknowledges gift from the Dine Dewees men and encourages others in area to support Pine Mountain.<\/p>\n

020 Wilson, Alfred Lee, Rev.<\/strong>, First Presbyterian Church, Canton, Ohio, to Ethel de Long Zande. February 20. Letter with check for $150.00 for Pine Mountain and notice that Wilson is leaving Canton, to head the Kenwood Interdenominational Church in Chicago.<\/p>\n

021 Wilson, Alfred Lee, Rev.<\/strong>, Kenwood Church, Chicago, IL, from Katherine Pettit. September 28. Thanks Rev. Wilson for his assistance in funding a preacher for PMSS to come from Harlan. The Baptist preacher would be partially subsidized by the Kiwanis Club but assistance from the Kenwood Church would be appreciated.<\/p>\n

022  Wilson, Alfred Lee, Rev.<\/strong>, Kenwood Church, Chicago, IL, from Katherine Pettit. December 19. Pettit thanks Rev. Wilson’s for donation of tins of candy for PMSS Christmas, as well as tooth brushes, handkerchiefs and knives.<\/p>\n

023 Winn, Mrs. Robert,<\/strong> Mt. Sterling, KY,  from Angela Melville. August 23.  Melville discusses possible large donor projects that Mrs. Will might support. The building of a “small four-room cottage” for the farmer, Mr. Browning and his wife and children, is one. The new cottage would replace the current Farm House living space and the building would be turned into a boy’s dormitory. She estimates the cost of new swelling as between $3500 and $4000. She also discussed endowed scholarships, equipment, medical needs. (2 pages)<\/p>\n

024 Wolle, Helen S<\/strong>., Akron, OH, from Evelyn K. Wells. April 24. Acknowledges an annual subscription from Wolle and notes  the appreciation of students.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

025 Woodward, A.H.<\/strong>, President, International Register Company, Railway Fare Registers and Metal Products, Chicago, IL, to Evelyn K. Wells, Secretary PMSS. July 19. Requests a statement of receipts and expenditures from the School before he can make donations for the year. Regrets the death of Ethel de Long Zande.<\/p>\n

Suggests that Wells look for insurance companies that would be willing to give a rebate on their commission as a gift to the School. to reduce the $1,400 bill coming due.<\/p>\n

Wells expresses reluctance to change insurance companies but notes that she will present his suggestions to the BOT.<\/p>\n

029 Work, Mrs<\/strong>. from Ethel de Long Zande. January 27.  Zande appeals to Mrs. Work for assistance with a student who has encountered a difficult situation.<\/p>\n

030 Yancy, Jessie,<\/strong> The Court House, Lexington, KY. from Evelyn K. Wells [?] for Katherine Pettit. July 27, 1928. Appeals to Yancey for assistance in providing work and rest for a former PMSS student at Berea who needs assistance so she will not have to return to a very impoverished environment and ruin her failing health.<\/p>\n

031 Zeigler, Earl F.<\/strong>, Minister, Fee Memorial Union Church and Berea College, KY to Angela Melville. September 19.  Agrees to set a date to accept an invitation to come to Pine Mountain.<\/p>\n

032 Zeigler, Earl F.<\/strong>, Minister, Fee Memorial Union Church and Berea College, KY from Angela Melville. September 24. Melville suggests the second week in November for a visit to PMSS. Notes that Evelyn K. Wells has left PMSS employment but will be active as a BOT member.<\/p>\n

033  Zeigler, Earl F.<\/strong>, Minister, Fee Memorial Union Church and Berea College, KY to Angela Melville. October 4.  Sets a date for a journey to PMSS on October 31st and November 1st. Asks what he can do for School.<\/p>\n

Melville outlines a plan for Zeigler to meet with students and to encourage a Hi-Y group at PMSS that would acquaint students ”   with the power of service to their brother students in some simple and graphic way, we should certainly be grateful…”<\/em><\/p>\n

035 Zeigler, Earl F.<\/strong>, Minister, Fee Memorial Union Church and Berea College, KY from Angela Melville. November 13. Melville writes, “We were glad to give you up to MIss Dingman (Helen Dingman) who asked us to do so, and I wonder if she asked you to let us know when could arrange to come here.. I very much hope that you can come to us before Christmas.”<\/p>\n
