The 1956 PMSS Calendar is the creation of Mary Rogers<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0wife of Burton Rogers, a former Director of Pine Mountain Settlement.\u00a0 The calendar drawings are typical of Mary’s work. Her drawings, easily identified by their elegant lines and often transcendent themes,\u00a0can be found on promotional literature, letter-heads, brochures and other public literature of the School. Her work is also found in illustrations she provided for various authors\u00a0of book and periodical articles. Her lyrical style and whimsical choice of subject have been, through the years,\u00a0 both captivating and effective\u00a0in engaging a large following. Deeply religious, Mary was the daughter of an English church Vicar and he often carried those beliefs into her work. She is well-known in Kentucky for her work\u00a0in founding the Environmental Education Program<\/a><\/strong> at Pine Mountain Settlement.<\/p>\n

As the director of the School’s Nativity Play<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and a collector of local and regional music and ballads, she was, for most of the thirty or more years she was at Pine Mountain, adept at weaving music and dance into her illustrations and life.<\/p>\n
