1957 PMSS Calendar\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 1957 PMSS Calendar is a quarter folded card format. The design and the drawing is by Mary Rogers, staff at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Created during the Community School years, it captures the quiet walks on the school grounds following the departure of the boarding students.<\/p>\n

The scene is of a snow-filled landscape with a bright star or moon that brightens the horizon. In the foreground is a boy and his dog, possibly\u00a0modeled from the youngest Rogers child,\u00a0Peter, and his dog, possibly “Waggy”. In the distance is a barn and a silo,\u00a0 The wintry scene is both stark and awe-inspiring, capturing the brightness of moonlight\u00a0on snow.<\/p>\n

Inside the card, the following description is found of the School at Pine Mountain.<\/p>\n

Pine Mountain Settlement School is in an isolated, narrow valley in southeastern Kentucky. It is a private\u00a0organization. christian in motivation, but non-sectarian, which cooperates with the Harlan County Board of Education to bring more than 200 children from 7 one-room school districts to a consolidated school, grades one through ten, on the Pine Mountain grounds. It also maintains a small hospital serving a large rural community.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
