Tags: <\/b>History PMSS summary 1950-1951, staff, events,\u00a0visiting groups, Fair Day, trustees, employee benefits, school enrichment, typhoid shots, roadside clinics, measles, tonsillectomies, community folk dances, student teaching, farm projects, awards, sawmills<\/span><\/p>\n History of the Pine Mountain Settlement School Staff Members:<\/b><\/p>\n June Allen, Nurse Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n Three church conferences were held at PMSS in June.<\/span><\/p>\n A summer American Friends Service Committee work camp put a new roof on the Chapel<\/a>, painted the outside of Laurel House, and installed toilets in Burkham Schoolhouse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Fair Day<\/a> — Community committee and participation.<\/span><\/p>\n A Pine Mountain Council for Education was formed.<\/span><\/p>\n Page 2, 1950-51<\/span><\/p>\n Trustees met at Pine Mountain Oct. 7, 1950, and at Berea College April 14, 1951.<\/span><\/p>\n Employees were included in Social Security program, Workers Compensation Insurance, and Blue Cross Health Care Plan. Teachers were included in the PMSS Blue Cross plan.<\/span><\/p>\n Henry Creech<\/a> reported to Trustees the suggestion of Dr. Oma Creech Fiske<\/a> that the Creech Memorial Hospital Fund be utilized for converting West Wind<\/a> dormitory for use as a hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n A summer American Friends Service Committee work camp put a new roof on the Chapel, painted the outside of Laurel House, and installed toilets in Burkham Schoolhouse. The PMSS Board authorized plans for a future AFSC work camp to help with construction of the Tool Shed<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n School enrichment included some time with Georgia Dodd in Home Ec., Mary Holsinger in Weaving, and Charles Creech in Woodworking.<\/span><\/p>\n Grace Rood worked in public health, school clinics and home visits. She gave free typhoid shots on Fair Day and held a roadside clinic outside the Big Laurel post office. The school community had a measles epidemic.<\/span><\/p>\n Dr. Harrison of Berea and Dr. Brown performed 10 tonsillectomies at the hospital. Dr. Harrison left equipment for further tonsillectomies.<\/span><\/p>\n Saturday night community folk dances were held in Laurel House.<\/span><\/p>\n Golda Pensol organized a fourth and fifth grade class music project.<\/span><\/p>\n Berea College senior elementary education students came to Pine Mt. for 2 week periods of student teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n The poultry project operated in the black; the dairy project was in the red, in large part due to the distance to markets. Bill Hayes suggested reducing the dairy herd to the size to supply the school and PMSS families. (The PMSS dairy herd was rated among the top 10% of Ayrshire herds in the United States.)<\/span><\/p>\n Bill Hayes, farm manager, received the Green Pastures award for 1950 as “Master Pastureman” for Harlan County.<\/span><\/p>\n The sawmill provided lumber, from the PMSS forest, for farm and poultry and other new buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n
