Tags: <\/b>History PMSS summary 1947-1948, staff, events, number of students,\u00a0reports, buildings and grounds, gifts, trips, trustees, speakers, visitors<\/span><\/p>\n History of the Pine Mountain Settlement School Staff Members:<\/b><\/p>\n Ada Becker, Nurse Number of Students:<\/strong> 101 (Second Semester: 94 boarding, 4 day)<\/span><\/p>\n Page 2, 1947-48<\/span><\/p>\n Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n Traditional:\u00a0<\/strong> Fair Day<\/a>, Mountain Day, Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Peasant Party<\/a>, Christmas<\/a>, New Year’s, George Washington Ball<\/a>, May Day, Commencement.<\/span><\/p>\n 21 members of the Creech family<\/a> were present for chapel<\/a> on Uncle William<\/a>‘s birthday, October 26, when Judge Lewis Little<\/a>, sole survivor of the group who chose the PMSS site, was the speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n The Guidance Institute was held at Harlan, September 2-5, led by Glyn Morris<\/a>, former PMSS Director, now Evarts High School Principal.<\/span><\/p>\n The Co-op group presented the play “The Devil and Daniel Webster\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n In March the Freshman girls gave a skit and fashion show of party dresses they’d made for about $3.00 each.<\/span><\/p>\n In April the Senior class of 11 girls and 4 boys presented \u201cLittle Women.”<\/span><\/p>\n Buildings and Grounds:<\/strong><\/p>\n Repairs and remodelling accomplished<\/strong> (facilitated by sawmill supplying PMSS lumber):<\/span><\/p>\n Boys Industrial<\/a> remodelled, terraces enclosed, two gables roofed. Room, and bathroom facilities, added to Little Log<\/a> cabin. New floor in Boys House<\/a> porch. Bridge near fountain<\/a> repaired. West Wind<\/a> downstairs shower repaired. Workers’ bathroom added at Big Log<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Shell and Metcalfe farm properties rented.<\/span><\/p>\n 1940 one and one-half ton International truck was replaced.<\/span><\/p>\n A telephone line connecting to the forestry office was installed July 12.<\/span><\/p>\n Special Gifts:<\/strong> Baby incubator given to hospital, new movie projector given by Mrs. Gratz.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Trips:<\/strong> Folk Dancers to Festival at Stuart Robinson School, performances at Harlan\u00a0<\/span>and Evarts High Schools, Loyall Kiwanis Club, Harlan PTA group.<\/span><\/p>\n 12 students and 4 supervisors attended the inauguration of Governor Earle…<\/span><\/p>\n Page 3, 1947-48<\/span><\/p>\n …Clements in Frankfort December 9. The PMSS dance team performed in the Rotunda.<\/span><\/p>\n The Senior Class went to Harlan to see \u201cGone With the Wind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Conference of Southern Mountain Workers, March.<\/span><\/p>\n Trustees:<\/strong> Edwin Price, Wheelwright, KY (brother-in-law of Margaret Motter<\/a>) was elected to the Board of Trustees.<\/span><\/p>\n Trustees met in New York November 7, 1947, and at PMSS April 2-4, 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n Chapel Speakers:<\/strong> Rev. Hunzicker, Evarts; Rev. Bischoff, Red Bird Mission; President Francis S. Hutchins,<\/a> Berea College (Palm Sunday).<\/span><\/p>\n Visitors:<\/strong> Phillip Roettinger, grandson of early Pine Mountain friend and benefactor, Phillip Roettinger, spent 5 days here, doing color film photography.<\/span><\/p>\n 3 Berea staff members + 1 student presented vocal, violin and piano music.<\/span><\/p>\n The regional conference of the Council of the Southern Mountain Workers met at PMSS May 4.<\/span><\/p>\n
