Mr. Webb has been appointed Acting Director, as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1015\">Glyn Morris<\/a><\/strong> has <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">leave<\/g> of absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Academic Report: <\/strong>Curricular emphasis was the same as previous year, except for a curtailed vocational department. Woodworking had increased activity. There were no auto mechanics or printing instructors. Four boys kept printing production on a fulltime basis, including use of the linotype after Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kentucky Department of Education continued PMSS as Grade &#8216;A\u201d (first given in 1939.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PMSS organized a \u201cPrep Group\u201d, with 15 students, for 8th grade graduates of local schools, and for students who attempted the county tests but failed. A Girls Lounge was established in the Work Shop, to give local girls a campus base. A couple of amateur beauticians offered services to the \u201cday girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Webb and Mr. Dodd were authorized to work out with the Harlan County Board of Education, and submit to the Trustees, a plan to consolidate Grades 4 &#8211; 8 from 5 neighboring one-room school districts and offer students tuition at PMSS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Events:<\/strong> A folk dance team performed at the Hazard K.E.A. meeting, the Evarts Historical Pageant and the Berea Fall Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softball and basketball teams played Red Bird and Big Laurel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine &amp; &#8220;Victory\u201d parties and balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Shake Hands with Murder,&#8221; a mystery farce, was presented by the Seniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">October 27 classes were dismissed for an &#8220;all-out scrap drive,&#8221; which resulted in collection of 8 tons of scrap metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November 2 the Co-op class presented a program on consumer testing, credit unions and the Southeastern Cooperative League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The books of the late <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=27238\"><strong>Miss Helen <\/strong><\/a><g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=27238\"><strong>deLong<\/strong><\/a><\/g>, sister of <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1696\"><strong>Ethel <\/strong><\/a><g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1696\"><strong>deLong<\/strong><\/a><\/g><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=1696\"><strong> Zande<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> were given to <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">PMSS,<\/g> and placed in a bookcase in <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=6330\">Laurel House<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith, Berea, visited PMSS and conducted classes in story-telling, puppetry, wood-carving <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">and<\/g> other crafts, and folk dancing. Punch and Judy shows, to which students from <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">near-by<\/g> schools were invited, were presented on Monday <g class=\"gr_ gr_28 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"28\" data-gr-id=\"28\">and .<\/g>..<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mce_9\"><strong>TRANSCRIPTION: HISTORY PMSS Summary 1942-1943 [image 21]<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Page 3, 1942-3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230; Wednesday nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in the Junior Ethics class presented a playlet, in &#8220;human puppet&#8221; jerky movements, \u201cThere&#8217;s No Place Like Home (For Ethical Problems)&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pine Mountain Puppeteers presented a second show February 24, dramatizing the ballads &#8220;The Farmer&#8217;s Sarned Old Wife&#8221; and &#8220;Lochinvar.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Co-op Class presented a three-act play, &#8220;Growing Pains,&#8221; March 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Health:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Nutter left March 1, 1942, Dr. Lester H. Beals served from April 23 to August 20, Dr. Emma and Dr. Francis Tucker arrived September 12. Dr. Emma set up a laboratory, a great help in diagnosis and general prestige.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former PMSS student Stella Taylor, a 1942 graduate of the Berea School of Nursing, was nurse for the July vacation period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typhoid shots were given to PMSS students, and at clinics at Little Laurel, Big Laurel, Incline and Creech schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chapel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends of Miss Sarah Putnam gave new \u201cStudent Hymnary&#8221; books for the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=485\">Chapel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In observance of President Roosevelt&#8217;s request that the first week of the New Year be set aside for prayer and meditation, Mr. Dodd and Mr. Rogers played the organ in the Chapel each afternoon at 4:40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=39901\"><strong>Rev. Lewis Lytle<\/strong><\/a> <em>(sic) <\/em>spoke in Chapel January 17 on &#8220;It Is More Blessed to Give Than Receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Luther Ambrose, Dr. Gordon Ross, Dr. E. J. Weeks, and President <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=69846\">Francis S. Hutchins<\/a>, Berea College, gave Chapel talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Construction:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acorn Cabin, &#8220;at the top of the Playground field&#8221; was constructed by Miss Cold&#8217;s class, used for marshmallow roasts and picnics, and by the Boy and Girl Scout Troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the wartime conditions, construction was to be limited to necessary repairs. Current needs cited were the Chapel west window sash, a change in the slope of the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=357\">Boys&#8217; Industrial Building<\/a> porch roof, <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=5974\">West Wind<\/a> porch and the painting of <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=782\">Far House<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TRANSCRIPTION: HISTORY PMSS Summary 1942-1943 [image 22]<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Page 4, 1942-43<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Farm: <\/strong>It was hoped that Mr. Hayes and Mr. Wilder could be exempt from the draft due to their importance for the farm work. The livestock inventory included 4 mules, 1 horse (pack library), 14 pigs, 14 milk cows, 3 heifers, 1 bull, 6 calves. The farm produced hay, ensilage corn, squash, potatoes, onions, sweet corn, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips, turnips, celery, cucumbers, greens, lettuce, spinach, peppers <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">and<\/g> apples. 500 baby chicks were purchased in hope of alleviating wartime shortages and price increases of eggs and chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the one-room school term ended, the Community group embarked on a &#8220;Victory Gardens&#8221; project.
