Line Fork Settlement<\/a>\u00a0as a teacher for the Coyle [Coil] Branch school close to the satellite settlement at Line Fork. She shared her teaching responsibilities with Miss Sommers who had been recruited\u00a0to teach at Bar [Bear] Branch school, another one-room school near the settlement. Like many workers at Line Fork, she was charged to do many duties besides teaching. Line Fork in 1921 was still under construction and Miss Davies tells of the digging of a well, building fences, canning food, and other chores while working at the settlement.<\/p>\nHer stay at Line Fork was very brief, from July of 1921 until September 1, 1921, when she left to teach in the Chicago City Schools.<\/p>\n
Mary Ellen Davies wrote a description of her time at Line Fork, images and transcription of which are displayed below. She signed her narrative as “Ellen Davies” but it appears\u00a0her full name was “Mary Ellen Davies.” [She is listed\u00a0in the PMSS\u00a0staff list as “Mary Davies.”] Little is known of her personal life but she may have been a graduate of the West Tennessee State Normal School in Memphis. When she graduated, the yearbook, the “Desoto,” noted that she was “willed” the “literary ability of Andrew Kincannon,” who was the President of the Normal School. The yearbook also noted that she was the lead in a miniature pageant “Demeter and Persephone,” in which she was Demeter, Goddess of Mother Earth. She was active in the Y.W.C.A. as the Treasurer of the campus chapter.<\/p>\n
If the Memphis\u00a0Ellen Davies is the same Ellen Davies at Pine Mountain, she was most likely a\u00a0very energetic and creative teacher and brought many talents to the programs at Line Fork.<\/p>\n
