[lf_stap_09_36_003.jpg]\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>TRANSCRIPTION: STAPLETON LETTER 1936 &#8211; September &#8220;My Dear Miss Lewis&#8230;Thank the lady&#8230; &#8220;<\/h3>\n<p>The Cabin<br \/>\nGilley P.O., Kentucky<br \/>\nSept. 3, 1936<\/p>\n<p>My Dear Miss Lewis<\/p>\n<p>Thank the lady please who recently sent five dollars for Pine Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>I missed the envelope with the slip on which her name was written\u00a0and\u00a0can&#8217;t find it &#8212; so please give her our grateful recognition of her interest in <a title=\"LINE FORK SETTLEMENT\" href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=2992\">Line Fork<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maude Holbrook from here, was awarded\u00a0the medal from The Daughters of the [American] Revolution for the girl having the greatest record of all round achievement in Pine Mt. School.\u00a0She has been given the place of House Mother in <a title=\"BIG LOG\" href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=262\">Big Log <\/a>&#8212; where there are eighteen or twenty new girls including eight who were there last year.<\/p>\n<p>Maude was twenty when she had the chance to go &#8212; <a title=\"KATHERINE PETTIT\" href=\"http:\/\/staging.pinemountainsettlement.net\/?page_id=424\">Miss Pettit<\/a> having loaned the entrance fee which Maude paid back by working at the Cabin the following summer.<\/p>\n<p>All except two of last year pupils from Line Fork are enrolled again this year and one new one. The two who dropped out just didn&#8217;t have mentality enough to wish to stay &#8212; indeed &#8212; they only stayed six weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lewis Smith was telling me how she remembered you at the Cabin and said &#8220;We are kin somewhere in our fore-fathers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The neighbors continually ask about Miss Pettit and can&#8217;t believe that she won&#8217;t come back again.
